Majora talks with a bona fide green superhero in our upcoming Labor Day special on work.
Okay, he may not have a spandex costume or a Batmobile. He may not have an alias or a sidekick. But he’s a superhero, nevertheless. By day, he’s Mike Fantasia, Hollywood location manager who makes movies with Sony, Paramount, Universal, and Warner Bros. And he’s a leader in advancing environmental concerns with his production crews.
Mike is working on a film adaptation of the comic book series — and early radio drama — The Green Hornet. The Green Hornet was a debonair newspaper publisher by day and crime-fighting masked hero by night. Mike gave us a behind-the-scenes tour of the set under construction for The Green Hornet, due to be released in the summer of 2010.
He walked us through Sony Soundstage 15, which housed the yellow brick set of The Wizard of Oz. Sony has some serious environmental initiatives of their own, including a goal of becoming zero waste. Mike showed us how Sony is reducing waste by cutting down on the amount of paper it uses for call sheets and production reports, and by composting all nonrecyclable trash from the studio lot. He showed us how the wood from a movie set will be used again, either salvaged for new sets, donated for housing construction, or recycled into plywood or other materials. "All the studios have gotten so much better with reduce, reuse, recycle," said Mike.
In his interview with Majora in the upcoming special Work in Progress, you’ll hear more about Mike’s work greening Hollywood. Who are the green superheroes fighting pollution and solving environmental problems in your neighborhood?
